The meeting of the Coordinating council of the heads of the competent authorities on combating drug trafficking (CCACD) of the member states of the Collective security treaty organization (CSTO) took place in the Kyrgyz Republic, on September 10.

Following the decisions of the 10th EAG Plenary regarding the enhancement of cooperation of the EAG member states with the Collective security treaty organization, for the first time representatives from almost all the EAG FIUs took part in the meeting.

In the course of the meeting, the CCACD activities results were discussed alongside further efforts in enhancing the effectiveness of its anti drug trafficking operation “Chanel”.

The EAG member states participation in the operation “Chanel” has a considerable input in ensuring the safety of the region’s countries. In particular, the participation of certain EAG member-state FIUs in the operation has proved the effectiveness of financial intelligence units’ efforts in strengthening measures countering the drug threat and legalization of proceeds from drug trafficking.

Valery Yaroshevsky noted that combating the laundering of proceeds from drug trafficking is one of the EAG priority tasks, particularly in terms of creating the so called “financial security belts” around Afghanistan, at which the EAG efforts in developing the AML/CFT regimes in the member states are aimed.

At the same time the EAG Working group on typologies is elaborating a research on “Laundering of proceeds from drugs, psychotropic agents and their precursors trafficking” which will result in the recommendations for the EAG member states.

Mr. Yaroshevsky also stated that the EAG is working on a special mechanism to facilitate the information exchange between member states in the framework of international financial investigations on this subject.
